Circle Wedge Quilts in EQ5

One easy way to conquer a circle quilt in EQ5 is to draw only one quarter of the circle in EasyDraw. One you have the quarter block made, set it in a 2 x 2 Horizontal Quilt layout, rotating to get the complete circle.

This first quilt is made up of 9 degree wedges. This is similar to one of the strata quilts on the card that comes with Marilyn Doheny's  9° Circle Wedge Ruler (made by Omnigrid). The strata stripes are offset 1" towards the smaller arc for each successive wedge to create the spiral effect.

9 Degree Spiral Strata

Below is the quarter block I created in EasyDraw. These are the settings I used in Drawing Board Setup:

    Snap to Grid points - 30 x 30
    Block size - 30" x 30"
    Graph paper divisions - 15 x 15

Each graph paper square equals 2".  The small arc is 6" and will make a 12" circle when set in a 2 x 2 horizontal quilt layout. Both the large and small arc are partitioned by 10. The wedge spoke lines are partitioned by 24.  To get 24 segments, I first partitioned by Thirds and then partitioned each "third" by 8. I created one quarter of a small Mariner's Compass in the right-hand corner within the small arc, but you can leave this part blank if you like...or create your own unique quarter circle design. After I finished creating the strata, I decided to delete and replace all curved segments of the large and small arcs with straight lines to make the design more in keeping with Doheny's method of piecing.

Since my block is 30" and the small arc is 6", each spoke is 24". This made it easy to create a repeating strata where the smallest stripe is equal to 1".  I started my repeating strata on the bottom wedge, and then on each successive wedge I offset the repeat towards the center by 1".  How you repeat the strata is up to you.  To make your strata circle into a quilt, I recommend purchasing Marilyn Doheny's ruler and follow her instructions for piecing and cutting the strips of fabric. We all know that quilter's can never have too many gadgets!
